On the complexity of bandwidth allocation in radio networks

In this paper we define and study a call scheduling problem that is motivated by radio networks. In such networks the physical space is a common resource that nodes have to share, since concurrent transmissions cannot be interfering. We study how one can satisfy steady bandwidth demands according to this constraint. This leads to the definition of a call scheduling problem. We show that it can be relaxed into a simpler problem: The call weighting problem, which is almost a usual multi-commodity flow problem, but the capacity constraints are replaced by the much more complex notion of non interference. Not surprisingly this notion involve independent sets, and we prove that the complexity of the call weighting problem is strongly related to the one of the independent set problem and its variants (max-weight, coloring, fractional coloring). The hardness of approximation follows when the interferences are described by an arbitrary graph. We refine our study by considering some particular cases for which efficient polynomial algorithm can be provided: the Gathering in which all the demand are directed toward the same sink, and specific interference relations: namely those induced by the dimension 1 and 2 Euclidean space, those cases are likely to be the practical ones. Key-words: Bandwidth allocation, radio networks, approximation algorithms, steady state traffic, maximum concurrent flow. A Novel Multicast Tree Construction Algorithm for Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Wireless Mesh Networks
Many appealing multicast services such as on-demand TV, teleconference, online games and etc. can benefit from high available bandwidth in multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks. When multiple simultaneous transmissions use a similar channel to transmit data packets, network performance degrades to a large extant. Designing a good multicast tree to route data packets could enhance the...
Estimating the Number of Wideband Radio Sources
In this paper, a new approach for estimating the number of wideband sources is proposed which is based on RSS or ISM algorithms. Numerical results show that the MDL-based and EIT-based proposed algorithm havea much better detection performance than that in EGM and AIC cases for small differences between the incident angles of sources. In addition, for similar conditions, RSS algorithm offers hi...
Joint Allocation of Computational and Communication Resources to Improve Energy Efficiency in Cellular Networks
Mobile cloud computing (MCC) is a new technology that has been developed to overcome the restrictions of smart mobile devices (e.g. battery, processing power, storage capacity, etc.) to send a part of the program (with complex computing) to the cloud server (CS). In this paper, we study a multi-cell with multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) system in which the cell-interior users request service...
Utility-based Adaptive Bandwidth Allocation for Multi-Class Traffic in Wireless Networks
Adaptive bandwidth allocation is becoming more attractive in wireless communications since it can dynamically upgrade or degrade the allocated bandwidth of ongoing calls to cope with the network resource fluctuation. In this paper, we propose a utility-based adaptive bandwidth allocation scheme for multi-class traffic in wireless networks. Our scheme allocates bandwidth to ongoing calls accordi...
Facet-inducing inequalities for chromatic scheduling polytopes based on covering cliques
Chromatic scheduling polytopes arise as solution sets of the bandwidth allocation problem in certain radio access networks supplying wireless access to voice/data communication networks to customers with individual communication demands. This bandwidth allocation problem is a special chromatic scheduling problem; both problems are N P-complete and, furthermore, there exist no polynomial-time al...
Radio Planning in Multibeam Geostationary Satellite Networks
We consider the problem of how a geostationary satellite should assign bandwidth to several service providers (operators) so as to meet some minimum requirements, on one hand, and to perform the allocation in a fair way, on the other hand. In the paper, we firstly address practical issues (such as integrity constraints), whereafter we provide a computational method for obtaining an optimal fair...
